Online Comedy Writing Courses

City Academy’s Online Comedy Writing Courses are aimed at anyone who wants to put more humour into their writing, whether that is for stage, online, written or scripted performances. The rules and techniques you'll learn can be adapted to any format, even just for sharing on social media or with friends.

Each week we'll look at techniques used by professional comedians and comedy writers to write imaginative and original comedy. From the rule of three, juxtaposition and comparison jokes to freestyle writing techniques and adding toppers and callbacks that leave your readers or audience in stitches. We'll look at examples of those techniques in action and practice using them ourselves.

The virtual course welcomes comedy writers at all levels - whether looking to have a fun time or wanting a professional and creative stretch. There'll be an opportunity each week to share a small amount of material with the group in spoken or written format and get some friendly constructive feedback.

There'll also be a chance to team up and collaborate with others online.

In this course you will

• Learn a range of effective joke structures for one-liners and longer scripts.
• Practice honing material to take it to the next level.
• See how professional writers rely on techniques that you can learn and use.
• As with all of our online writing courses you will get feedback on your writing and support to develop new skills. 

You will need

• A device with a camera and microphone
• A desk, table or flat surface on which to write
• Some paper or a notebook 
• A pen or pencil

A note on participation: Enhancing these skills requires practical and active participation. As this is an interactive, group class all students will be required to have their videos turned on.
